We want to look at pretty things, not think about politics. Art should discuss what is happening in life. Conceptual art- usually tackling an issue, analyze and present to a public, text based, informationally based. Haacke investigates the provenance of manet"s bunch of asparagus, 1880 at the wallraf- Haacke breaks the floor of the pavilion where hitler walked. Degenerate art program- nazis went in and took all modern art from collections. Artists they thought of as degenerate got their art seized and/or sold. Removed the white plaster, removed layer, critique of museum spaces and white. Art is not displayed in a neutral space it is commercial. There is no outside of the institution students are often bummed out by this. Be true to yourself not always real. In the 1970s it begins to claim to be art. Bernd and hilla becher, anonymous sculpture: a typology of technical buildings, 1970. They set out to conceptually observe these phenomena through photography.
