Making the solar system: the nebular collapse, nebula = cloud of cold gas, at some point, the cloud collapsed on itself (triggered by a supernova?, once the collapse began, gravity ensured that it continued. 3 processes that took a cold, low density gas cloud and turned it into a rapidly spinning disc of gas with a star in the center. Heating: as the nebula collapsed, gravitational potential energy was converted into kinetic & thermal energy. Spinning: the nebula spun super slowly at first, as it collapsed, angular momentum ensured it kept spinning: as it spins, it flattens (like pizza dough) Collisions average out stuff"s velocities, making random motions more orderly. Key idea: small objects caused by accretion and subsequent gravitational interactions: exceptions caused by gravity and collisions.
