Document Summary

How does light interact with matter: emission light is radiated (given off) from matter, absorption energy from light is taken in by matter, transmission light goes through things, reflection/scattering light bounces off matter. Why is grass green: sun emits visible light, chlorophyll absorbs all colors except green, the green light is scattered toward your eye, green light is transmitted through your cornea, to the cones in your eye. Humans have 3 eye cones we see red, green, and blue. Butterflies have 5 eye cones see 2 more colors than us! Color = reflected and scatters light from the sun: i. e. Neptune = blue because it reflects and scatters blue light emitted from the sun. Visible light = colors: discovered by newton, white light = presence of all colors (can be split apart i. e. prisms, water, red= long wavelengths, blue = short wavelengths. Matter = atoms that combine to form molecules & compounds.
