Lab 5 –IR & Greenhouse Effect

Section 10
Objectives: Our first objective in this lab is to grasp an understanding of the properties of
emission, and absorption of radiation in the Earth’s atmosphere. Our next objective is to learn
how the Earth’s atmospheric and surface temperatures could be estimated by a weather satellite
in space. Next we will comprehend how the temperature of the Earth’s lower atmosphere is
dependent on the amount of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other greenhouse gasses that are
present. Lastly, we will begin to understand that if electromagnetic radiation is absorbed by a
solid, liquid, and/or gas, the solid, liquid, and/or gas will warm, and this means that, on the
contrary, if electromagnetic radiation is emitted, the solid, liquid, and/or gas will cool.

Document Summary
Objectives: our first objective in this lab is to grasp an understanding of the properties of emission, and absorption of radiation in the earth"s atmosphere. Our next objective is to learn how the earth"s atmospheric and surface temperatures could be estimated by a weather satellite in space. Next we will comprehend how the temperature of the earth"s lower atmosphere is dependent on the amount of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other greenhouse gasses that are present. Questions: the amount of ir radiation that is escaping from the hot pot is decreasing when we add more and more sheets. This is because before we added any sheets, the ir gun was pointed at the atmosphere, which radiates at a very low temperature. For example, if there is more water vapor that means more clouds which increases the albedo of earth, which causes solar energy to reflect off the clouds back into space and lead to cooling.
