Lower portions of the atmosphere (birds flying) Range of comfortable core body temperature (can be maintained with clothing and shelter) Mainly concentrated in areas best for agricultural production or near. Biomes are areas of land characterized by their climate and predominant type of oceans vegetation. Large scale patterns that help define biomes: temperature and solar irradiance, precipitation(rain and snow) and wind. Solar irradiance- the total solar energy per square meter of surface. More irradiance at equator and less at poles. Proximity of a large body of water. Surface absorption or reflection affects air temperature. A dry area on the leeward side of a mountain. As air rises up the windward side of a mountain, it cools and condenses. Air that descends down the mountain is dry. Vary based on latitude: tropical, temperate, boreal.
