Document Summary
Maintaining homeostasis steady state physiological condition of the body. B. osmoregulation maintaining appropriate water balance for an animal"s. Why both with homeostasis? (it is energy expensive) In response to changes in external conditions: Ectotherms body temperature determined by environment (mostly) Endotherms can regulate body temperature using their metabolism. Ectotherms can be homeotherms (i. e. , have constant body temperatures). E. g. , burrowing and basking behavior in reptiles. Pull blood vessels away from the skin where they would lose heat to the outside (giving it a blueish look) Goosebumps are meant to make your hair stand up and increase your boundary layer and keep you warm. Thorax is undergoing muscular contractions, giving the thorax heat, the insect does this because flying doesn"t work well if the wings don"t actively shiver before they fly. They must warm up the temperature of the thorax so they are able to power their wings fast enough to take off.
