Reassortment - possible when multiple virus types infect the same individual host and get into the same cell. Not as unlikely as you might think. With increased travel as well as working closely with animals, there is the potential for this to happen. High mutation rate + reassortment + hugh human host population with high transmission rates = huge potential for rapid evolution.
