Syncreism combinaion of diferent and seemingly contradictory, cultural forms into a new hybrid. Believed that these people all came from asia via the land/ice bridge over bering. Allowed to keep their drums in south america (unlike in north america) Ethnic majority appropriaing the music of the indigenous minoriies for naionalist purposes. Song intended to be a protest against what had been happening. This song is from a play about the exploitaion of peruvian naive by european industrialists. Charango (similar to banjo/lute made from an armadillo) Simon and garfunkel - paul simon made a new version (wrote the lyrics) Clave [key] a repeated rhythm on which the enire rhythmic framework is based. Rhythm is played on claves (percussion sicks, banged together to make sound) 3+2 clave (always 5 notes in clave, can"t be divided equally) The three notes part is more syncopated, not the feeling of repose (release) Played on 1, 2. 5, 3 + 6, 7.
