Document Summary
Is made up of purplish to greenish mudstones and some sandstones with unidirectional cross-bedding. The mudstones contain paleosols (ancient soils), roots, plant fossils, and dinosaur bones. The morrison formation is one of the most important rock units for dinosaur discoveries dating back to the late 1800s. Famous jurassic dinosaurs such as apatosaurus (brontosaurus), Allosaurus, and stegosaurus (colorado state fossil) come from the. Morrison fm. figured prominently in the bone wars (late 1800s) People coming out west to collect fossils. Ships them back east this is how the east got a lot of its big dinosaurs. They were in competition with each other. Threatened each other to keep each other off of their sites. Some of the best dinosaur fossils in the morrison fm can be seen at the dinosaur. Dakota sandstone near dinosaur ridge (golden, co) sits above the morrison fm. Also has shales and siltstones with burrows and brackish (mixture of salt and fresh waters, reduced salinity) water fossils.
