GEOL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Foraminifera, Quality Control
Document Summary
Quality control thinking is unbiased thinking that utilizes all available information to analyze a subject. Science is the gathering of facts and drawing conclusions from the data you collect. Scientific inquiry: generate an idea (or a question, develop an explanation (or a hypothesis, test it (experiment, validate your findings (develop a conclusion, was your hypothesis correct) If your conclusion is correct, somebody else should be able to repeat your experiment and arrive at the exact same conclusion. A hypothesis is an educated guess that needs further study. A theory is an explanation whose conclusion has been supported by many years of research. It is not a guess like the colloquial term. A law or a principle is an explanation stronger than a theory, it is essentially a fact (i. e. the law of gravity). Foraminifera or forams are unicellular ameba with small shells, are benthic (bottom dwellers). Forams have existed for over 500 million years.
