GEOL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: 30 Foot Fall, James Hutton, James Ussher
Document Summary
Some geologic features take millions of years to form (ex: mountains). In the mid-1600s, james ussher believed earth was created on sunday, oct. 23, 1650-1654: catastrophism: early belief that earth"s landscapes had been shaped by great o o catastrophes (rapid events) It was an attempt to fit the rates of earth processes to the idea that earth was only a few thousand years old. James hutton: uniformitarianism -- principle that states that the laws (processes) that operate today have also operated in the past. Hutton introduced the science of modern geology in the late 1700s. Geologic time: geologists are now able to assign relatively accurate dates to events in earth history (absolute-age dating, relative dating: events are placed in their proper sequence or order without knowing their absolute age in years. Sources of geologic data: outcrops of rock formations, cores from wells, chemical analyses, geophysical (earthquakes, 3-d seismic), wells that are drilled (e. g. rock properties), satellite images and maps.
