Thebes and athens are the two major cities that will be most covered in this class. Peloponnese is the island where sparta is located. Initially, greece is not threatened by macedonia because macedonia would have to travel an extraordinary distance in order to conquer greece but also because greece was embroiled in their own civil war, the peloponnesian war. The war was fought between sparta, thebes and athens. They were fighting for hegemony, or total control over greece. The ionians wanted to be independent but considered themselves athenians. Persia knew their desires to become independent and began recruiting the. Ionians to join their side before the greeks could turn their full attention to persia. There are 4 periods of ancient greece: archaic, classical, hellenistic, and roman. Classical is considered the golden age of greece. Greece also was a dominant military power during the classical period and many consider the hellenistic period a decline in greek history.
