IPHY 2420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Lean Body Mass, Energy Economics, Adipose Tissue
Document Summary
Apple shaped bodies develop visceral fat which increases cholesterols and ldls but decrease. Apple shaped bodies therefore have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. Energy balance is energy intake versus energy expenditure. If these energy intak and expenditure are balanced, your body weight will remain unchanged. If the ratio is out of balance, you will either gain or lose weight. Essentially, energy balance is when you consume the same amount of calories as you expend per day. Negative energy balance or an energy deficit leads to weight loss. Energy excess or positive energy balance is when you take in more energy than you need which leads to weight gain. The basil metabolic rate or bmr is the amount of calories we burn while resting. This is how most people burn the majority of their energy. Anything above the bmr is any movement, which can range from intense weightlifting to brushing your teeth.
