IPHY 2420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Food Intolerance, Gluten, Portal Vein
Document Summary
When we chew food in the mouth, that is an example of mechanical. Mechanical digestion is when we physically break food down. Chemical digestion is when we chemically digest food. For example, salivary amylase is an enzyme created by our saliva that digests carbohydrates. The esophagus is a tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Peristaltic is the muscular contractions that move food through the gi tract. Gastro esophageal sphincter keeps food in the stomach, it separates the esophagus from the stomach. If it does(cid:374)"t work right, (cid:272)o(cid:374)te(cid:374)ts fro(cid:373) the sto(cid:373)a(cid:272)h go (cid:271)a(cid:272)k up i(cid:374)to the esophagus, causing heartburn. The stomach uses mechanical and chemical digestion to digest fats and proteins. Gastric juice contains a very strong acid that is slightly less acidic than battery acid (ph1). Pepsin is an enzyme that digests mainly proteins. Pepsin is the only enzyme that does not end in ase. Gastric lipase is an enzyme that digests fats.
