You can still get sunburnt in winter and in cloudy overcast weather. Skin cancer facts: most common cancer in the u. s. (especially in co, 1 in 5 americans will develop skin cancer in their life, more new cases than breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer combined. Melanin: a pigment that makes skin colored and is a protective factor against the sun. Three forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (non-melanoma), squamous cell carcinoma (non-melanoma), melanoma. Non-melanoma skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (bcc) Appears on sun exposed part of body. Clinical presentation: often presents as a persistent, non-healing sore: squamous cell carcinoma (scc) 2nd most common skin cancer not very deadly appears on sun exposed areas. Clinical presentation: scaly, red, hard nodules that ulcerate and may bleed. Less than 5% of all skin cancer cases but majority of deaths. 2nd most common form of cancer in 15-29 year olds.
