NRSC 2100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Radial Arm Maze, Temporal Lobe, Perirhinal Cortex

45 views5 pages

Document Summary

Electrical stimulation of the human temporal lobes. Wilder penfield experiments: stimulation > sensations like hallucinations, recall past experiences. Caveat: minority of patients, all with abnormal brains. Henry molaison (h. m): could not retain new information (mild retrograde amnesia) Bilateral removal of medial temporal lobes to treat severe epileopsy (removal of enthorinal and perirhinal cortex, part of amygdala and caudal 2/3 of hippocampus) We have short and long term memory. Info flow through medial temporal lobe: cortical association cortex parahippocampal and rhinal cortical areas hippocampus fornix (send neurons back towards cortex sometimes) thalamus, hypothalamus. The diencephalon and memory processing: the fornix comes from medial temporal lobe and and send their axons to thalamic nuclei. Radial arm maze in rats: normal rats go down each arm for food only once but hippocampal lesions increased errors, normal and lesioned rats learn which arms are baited and avoid the rest. The hippocampus is more seen as relational information.
