Bentham is still a part of the staff at a university. Actions are right based on what produces the greatest happiness and the least unhappiness. To find a social policy you must find a rule that produces the most pleasure and the least pain. The greatest happiness principle: the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest amount of people. Consequentialism: consequences are the most important factor. We hold insects, adulatory, lying, torturing people are wrong, but only the consequences mat- ter so these things are not necessary wrong.
