Document Summary

When a congress member does well, they usually get re-elected with few exceptions. The electoral qualification for congress are age, citizenship, and residency. There are 2 senators per state (100 total). There are a ton of house members approximately 400 something. States are in charge of all congressional elections. The 17th amendment altered the way senators are elected. This amendment shifted the vote from legislators to the people. The progressive movement wanted to change this rule (the rule that legislators not people voted on congress members) because state legislator votes were corrupted, congress members were buying votes. Reformers passed the 17th amendment to eliminate this corruption. Every house seat and 1/3rd of the senate seats are up for election every 2 years. Most congress members serve at least 10 years. Each state is awarded congress members based off population (co has 7). Single-member voting is when citizens elect one congress member.
