Document Summary

Schools should prepare children for life: humanist ideology carried the day . John dewey: well known american philosopher and educator, started a progressive school in chicago (lab school at u chicago, critical of the humanist approach. Thought schools should be focused around occupations . Things that we do that are important. Could be jobs, but not isolated to jobs. Build the child"s world from the family outwards (neighborhood, city, etc. ) Pay attention to more than just academic topics (ex. Cooking: dewey himself = radical, but pedagogy adopted by less radical people. Dewey lamented students using learned knowledge for selfish advantage. Hated when learning was used as a way of showing off: dewey"s approach. Emphasis on why we do things in school. Didn"t want the teaching of reading to be separated from why we teach it. School should be a place to live, not learn lessons. Children are naturally curious, so no need to coerce them into learning.
