SLHS 3116 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Extrapyramidal System, Central Sulcus, Muscle Tone
Document Summary
Learning goals as a study guide for the exam. Parmetal pathways start in the motor gyrus. Central fissure and central sulcus are the same thing. Motor strip is anterior to the central sulcus. Distribution of motor nerves: bitter area on homunculus = more motor nerves (homunculus is found on the motor strip) Layer 6 of motor strip: pyramidal nerves that give rise to other nerves (fast because there"s only one synapse) Extrapyramidal system: synapsing with many different places in the brain; muscle tone for skilled behaviour, multisynaptic pathway so it"s slow (muscle tone control is always pretty slow) Know what happens with damage to the pyramidal (discrete movements) vs. extrapyramidal (muscle tone that forms the basis for you to do those skills) The more relaxed you can be about performing under stress the better you are at controlling your muscle tone (stress/tension) Hole that allows spinal cord to enter skull. Frontal = motor strip, personality, judgement, memory.
