SOCY 1004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Basic Norm, Naturism, Essentialism
Document Summary
How do we categorize different ways of thinking about deviance from a sociological. Deviance: behavior, beliefs, or characteristics that violate, depart or deviate from a basic norm and that are likely to generate negative reactions in persons who observe or hear about the norm violation. The idea that deviance can be both behavior, beliefs, and even characteristics. There has to be something that is done, thought, or characteristic and it has to violate a basic norm and there must be a negative reaction. No reaction - we would not consider it a type of deviance. Whether or not a specific behavior is considered deviant depends on all these factors. Ex. commercial for a specific type of cigarette: Something can be deviant at one point in time and not at another point in time. E(cid:454).
