Chapter 1 Notes
Cells are the simplest units of life
P1: Cell theory: all organisms are composed of multiple cells, cells are the smallest units
of life, new cells come from pre-existing cells.
P2: Living organism use energy
o Reactions often release energy in a process called cellular respiration cellular
respiration A process by which living cells obtain energy from organic molecules
and release waste products.
o Chemical reactions involved with the breakdown and synthesis of cellular
molecules are collectively known as metabolism.
o Plants, algae, and certain bacteria directly harness light energy to produce their
own nutrients in the process of photosynthesis
P3: Living organisms interact with their environment
P4: Living organisms maintain homeostasis
o Stability
P5: Living organisms grow and develop
o Development: a series of changes in the state of a cell, tissue, or organ.
P6: The genetic material provides a blueprint for reproduction
o All living organisms contain DNA
o Organisms MUST reproduce
o DNA is heritable
o Genes are transcribed into RNA then mRNA then polypeptides with a specific
amino acid sequence.
P7: Populations of organisms evolve from one generation to the next
o Evolution
P8: All species (past and present) are related by an evolutionary history
P9: Structure determines function
P10: New properties of life emerge from complex interactions
o When individual components in an organism interact with each other or with the
external environment to create novel structures and functions, the resulting
characteristics are called emergent properties
P11: Biology is as an experimental science
o An inquiry process.
P12: Biology affects our society
Levels of organization
o Atoms
o Molecules and macromolecules
o Cells
o Tissues
o Organism
o Population
o Community
o Ecosystem
o Biosphere
