In the past couple of weeks, over sixty tons of garbage has washed ashore in the. Dominican republic, and that is only the quantity they have managed to clean up. Hundreds of volunteers and city workers have been working continuously to battle against the trash being pushed onto the beaches in santo domingo. All devices have been put to work, from pikes to shovels to excavators, in order to lift the garbage off of the beaches before waves bring new piles. Most of the waste has been plastic bottles and styrofoam takeout boxes. Unfortunately, this is not the worst of the trash, since the deadliest items are the small plastic pieces that have broken down and released chemicals. These toxins are filling local areas, endangering both animals and humans alike.
