Document Summary

Urinary tract infections, urinary calculi & spinal cord injury lecture notes. Utis are the most common bacterial infection in women. Women have a shorter urethra than men leading to a higher incidence. At least 20% of women will develop at least one uti in their lifetime. More than 100,000 people are hospitalized annually for utis. Uti"s can be broadly classified as upper or lower according to the location in the urinary system. Upper involves the renal parenchyma, pelvis, and ureters and typically causes fever, chills, and flank pain. Pyleonephritis implies inflammation, usually caused by infection, cystitis indicates inflammation of the bladder, urethritis means inflammation of the urethra. Urosepsis is a uti that has spread systemically and is life-threatening condition requiring emergency treatment. Complicated include those infections with coexisting obstruction, stones or catheters; diabetes or neurologic diseases, or pregnancy induced changes. Uncomplicated occur in an otherwise normal urinary tract and usually involve only the bladder.
