Document Summary

As american citizens, we exercise so many rights and privileges that most of us take for granted. For example, as americans when we turn 18 we are eligible to have a say by voting but some of us take advantage of this privilege. Yet, this is not the case for millions of people who live in puerto rico because despite them being legal citizens of the. United states they do not have the luxury to vote. 50 states are eligible to vote in our elections and unfortunately, puerto rico doesn"t make the cut. Puerto ricans deserve to be recognized as a state, instead of just a territory, and have the same benefits/rights that every american is given; citizenship is not enough. On august 21, 1959, hawaii was admitted as the filthiest state of the united. Before hawaii was granted statehood it was only a territory of the u. s. just like puerto rico is to this today since 1898.
