Document Summary
Nutrition the process of consuming and using food and nutrients. Nutrient any substance consumed by an animal that is needed for survival, growth, development, tissue repair, or reproduction. All organisms require nutrients to survive: food is used for energy and to make other macromolecules. Basic similarities in animal cells lead to basic similarities in nutrition and what animals require: organic nutrients. Glucose -> used almost immediately for energy: carbon for organic molecules. Used for energy over a longer time period. Carnivores consume animal flesh or fluids. Omnivores eat both plant and animal material. Essential nutrients: certain compounds cannot be synthesized from any ingested or stored precursor molecule, they must be obtained in diet, 4 groups. 8 amino acids are required by many animals: isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Some herbivores have evolved ability to synthesize them, otherwise, a vegetarian diet needs to be properly balanced.
