NFS 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Muscle Tone, Yogurt, Probiotic
Document Summary
Process of breaking down foods into absorbable units. Wavelike muscle contractions of gi tract that push the contents along. Stomach has three muscle sets that force the chyme down. Stomach releases gastirc juices and liquifies the chyme. Pyloric sphincter opens and allows chyme to pass in small amounts. Squeezing of the intestine along its circular muscles. Mixes chyme, promote contect w/ digestive juices and allows the absorption of intestinal walls. Inner surface of small intestine has villi (fingerlike projections within the folds) that have microvilli (small hair projections on each cell of every villi that trap nutrients and transport them to the cell) Within the microvilli are enzymes and pumps which act on different nutrients. Crypts are tubular glands between the villi that secrete intestinal juice into the small intestine. Cells of the intestinal tract are specialized to absorb different nutrients. Food eaten together enhance each other use in the body.
