NEUROSCI 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Photic Zone, Occipital Lobe, Cochlear Implant
Document Summary
Brain activity measurement (fmri, eeg, etc. ) feature extraction (biomarkers, coherence, etc. ) feature classification (dense mathematical equation) neurofeedback (visual, audible, haptic, etc. ) Applications: communication by thoughts bci spelling interaction within virtual reality environment controlling prosthesis gaming controlling mechatronic device. Neuroprosthetics: device designed to use mathematical equation to change input to output, ex: cochlear implant place wire into window, receives signal, transmitter sends signal to auditory nerve. Bypasses cochlea: ex: visual implant: device interprets photic information and send info to device imbedded in occipital lobe, limitations. Can only be used if according cortex has already been exercised/tuned to. Hippocampal prosthetics environment: chronic seizures disrupt ca3-ca1 pathway in hippocampus memory deficits, ex: mice have to pick specific lever, rewarded when correct. Place electrode in ca3-ca1 path determine signals produced during correct/incorrect performances. Apply correct response signals to a code deliver correct response code to induce mouse to make correct response. Opposite effect if you deliver the incorrect response code .
