RELIGION 155 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Satan, Zebedee, Disciple Whom Jesus Loved
Document Summary
Rel 155: the new testament: 18 october 2016. There are major differences between john and the synoptics: lack of verbatim agreement between john and the synoptics. At best, the agreements between john and the synoptics are minor only a handful of words. Feeding of the 5,000 (john 6) even the word for fish differs (cf. also barley loaves for the bread): different order. But is it easy to exaggerate john"s differences from the synoptics: like mark, the entire book is geared to the passion. The whole of the second half of the book (john 11-21) covers the last week of jesus" life an even greater proportion of the book than mark. Beware of the idea that mark is historical and john is not. Both mark"s and john"s approaches are theological, literary constructs: john"s christology. Major difference from the synoptics is over christology: the way jesus speaks, the open proclamation of his identity, his self-confidence, his relationship with god.
