RELIGION 155 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Synoptic Gospels, Kerygma, Antichrist
Document Summary
Rel 155: the new testament: 8 december 2016. English (cid:515)revelation(cid:516) is greek apokalypsis, taking away the veil. This is the moment where the nt embraces a well-known jewish genre of the second temple period. Represented in the ot already by daniel, but also found in non-canonical texts like 1. For years, an apocalypse was defined as a peculiarly eschatological phenomenon, and it was deprecated a negative development from good, old-fashioned prophecy, in which forth-telling was as important as foretelling. Note the eschatological element very strongly in revelation, already in the first chapter: 1. 1: (cid:515)the things which must soon take place(cid:516) (cid:343). (cid:345)(cid:497) (cid:515)the time is near(cid:516) (cid:343). 7(cid:497) (cid:515)he is coming with the clouds(cid:516) etc. The definition of apocalyptic has continued to exercise scholars for many years since, often unnecessarily so. John j. collins aimed for a hold-all definition, which itself was criticized by others: It is not perfect, but it may be the best we can get.
