Modernism/postmodernism: not exclusive to literature (includes visual arts, etc. ) semiotic: means one fixed thing and other more hidden things (??) Prospero (exiled duke of milan) usurped by brother (alonso), exiled (w/ daughter. Miranda) on island, learns sorcery to protect daughter and control island: slave: caliban (son of sycorax, servant: ariel (the tempest) Caliban claims the island is his by his mother, taught prospero to survive.
