Hominin dispersals: identify which species dispersed, when, and why, identify environmental influences on dispersal patterns and pathways, address the timing of modern human dispersals into asia and the americas. Migration means moving to a place and then going back to where you lived before. In human evolution, both happened all the time. Focus will be on large scale out of africa dispersals: homo erectus they were the first to disperse. Left africa 1. 9 million years ago: homo heidelbergensis left africa <700,000 years ago, homo sapiens left africa <120,000 years ago. Inherent curiosity: erectus out of africa -- environment. Avoided areas densely populated by large carnivores. Association with temperate warm sites during dispersal. Oldest evidence of hominins out of africa - 1. 8ma. Rapid dispersal from africa to seasonal climate. High anatomical diversity: erectus in china. Fossils disappeared in 1941 while beijing was under japanese occupation. 2005: chinese govt. sets up a committee to determine their fate: erectus in indonesia.
