Earth owes its habitability primarily to a combination of size and distance from the sun. Geology the study of earth and any world with a solid surface. 3 aspects of earth"s geology that stand out: volcanism releases gases that become trapped in earth"s interior as the planet formed, these gases being the original source of earth"s atmosphere and oceans. Fossils relics of organisms that lived and died long ago. Geological record composed of the rocks and fossils that make up earth"s history. Geologists classify three basic types of rocks. Synonymous with fossil record but fossil record only applies to the relics of life. Igneous rock made from molten rock that cools and solidifies. Basalt dark, dense rock that is produced by undersea volcanoes. Granite light and less dense than basalt. Metamorphic rock been structurally or chemically changed by high pressure.
