ASTRO-110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Litmus, Indian Space Research Organisation
Document Summary
Habitability refers to an environment where some form of life may survive. Life on earth uses 25 to 92 naturally occurring elements with 4 comprising 96% of organic matter. Heavily abundant in our solar system and present in other solar systems. And was formed from complex organic molecules that should be present on every other planet. The search for life is largely dependent on the presence of liquids in an atmosphere. Concentrate on worlds that have both, because they would allow for interactions. The amount of energy available from sunlight decreases with the square of the distance between organic molecules to form life from the sun. Life in the outer solar system would have to be much larger than life on earth or more efficient at collecting solar energy or much slower metabolism. Light in the far outer solar system would be too weak to support life.
