Document Summary

Touch, pressure, vibration, temperature, pain, body & limp position. Receptors located in skin, muscles, bones, joints, and internal organs. We rely on the special senses to view the world. Based on how they are activated, name 5 ways to classify receptors. Be able to critically think about what each receptor is able to sense and give an example. Activated: by mechanical forces such as touch, pressure, vibration, stretch & itch. Merkel disks: free nerve endings that end on merkle cells detecting light touch. Meissner"s corpuscles: encapsulated nerve endings, tells us where we"ve been touched. Pacinian corpuscles: layers of tissue surrounding nerve ending, sense first pressure or vibration. Ruffini corpuscles: encapsulated nerve endings responding to continuous pressure. Specialized free nerve endings located below surface of skin: 1 type responds to warmth; others respond to cold. Activated by changes in chemicals in mouth, nose, and bodily fluids. Noci latin for harm, injury, or pain. Respond to damaging stimuli that result in pain.
