Place: is a unique collection of human and physical features on the earth’s surface, including
environmental conditions, physical and human landscapes, cultural practices, social life and
economic activities.
Places are…:
● Invested with meanings: what are the meanings behind place?
● Lived-in by people; where everyday life happens
● Emotional and part of our memory
● Cultural symbols/symbols of power
● Site of innovation, change and conflict
Landscapes: is the specific arrangement or pattern of features on the land.
● Can be symbolic of national identity
Human Geographers ask questions about spatial variation:
● Where are things and why, and how and why are things different from place to place?
● “… the study of the spatial organization of human activity and of people’s relationships
with their environments.”
