Rural areas are dominated by extensive land uses such as agriculture and forestry, or it could be largely open spaces of underdeveloped land. A sparsely populated area necessitating travel for amenities to supplied in the locality, i. e. cinema, bank, supermarket. Rural areas should be defined as area in with the primary land use is of an agricultural nature. Rural is as much of a state of mind as it is an actual place. It is an acceptance and understanding of people and things living in a mainly agricultural area, their practices and traditions. Rural is seeing the stars on a clear night, being able to breathe unpolluted air, seeing wildfire in its natural habitat being able to sleep without constant noise of traffic. Rural areas are defined with respect to: proximity to : urban centers, functionality, population. Quebec"s rural settlement patterns are influenced by river transport.
