Three theses of existentialism: the philosophy of what it means to exist, to have a lived experience. We construct or create ourselves through our radical freedom of the will. The value of life is in the process, not reaching the end. Death is the only certainty to existence. Sartre: we are condemned to be free. We are free to create our own essence; we are condemned to absolute freedom; there are no determining factors whatsoever. Continues descartes"s methodological starting point of each person"s subjective experience: the self-conscious experience of oneself. Focuses on issues of personal identity and choice. Sartre"s existentialism is atheistic and the world is absurd; kierkegaard"s approach is theistic. In the extreme, the view that one ought to have clear rational justification for all beliefs, including religious beliefs.
