Benign neglect- culture is something you are free to pursue on your own time in your private life, in the same way that the state cannot endorse a preferred religion for any reason- we shouldn"t promote one culture. Liberal neutrality- the state shouldn"t rank the merits of different conceptions of the good life- you still can promote english, not because its worthier, it is the most common language. Gross domestic product- this doesn"t capture how individual citizen"s fare, even when you do factor in distribution this fails to capture how people are doing- their health, education. Capabilities approach- gives an account of basic constitutional principles that should be rejected as a bare minimum of what respect for human dignity require. Why should we be good citizens: civic republicanism: aristotle view (this view isn"t popular anymore) Participate is political democracy share views etc . Civility stems out of norms of non-discrimination: it"s no longer all right to just not discriminate.
