PHILO-120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Theodicy, Perception, Myriagon
Document Summary
It is not surprising that the meditator appeals to the imagination in order to prove the essence of material things. Given descartes"s account of the essence of material things, there are essential differences among different kinds of bodies. All bodies have the same essence, and therefore there are no essential differences among them. True and immutable natures are akin to platonic forms: because they are the objects of the pure intellect. The fifth meditation proof of god"s existence could be given before the third meditation proof of god"s existence. The fifth meditation proof depends on the truth of clear and distinct ideas, proven at the end of the fourth meditation, which in turn depends on the third meditation proof of god"s existence. Argument for the existence of corporeal objects. Imagining requires mental efforts not required in understanding. Imagination is not part of my essence. Sensory perception not part of my essence. Argument for the existence of corporal objects.
