PSYCH-200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Automatic Behavior, Brain Death, Brainstem
Document Summary
Older people show more symptoms, and are less likely to be diagnosed. Symptoms in long term care facilities are two times as common. Death of a spouse: most recover after a period of time, some never do. Physical impairments: diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, alcohol use. 4 reasons why older are not diagnosed as much as they should be: Symptoms less severe, different than young people diagnosed. Symptoms tend to be different in older people. Few emotional, unlikely to tell someone if they are sad or depressed. More likely to report cognitive/physical symptoms: forgetfulness, sleep disturbances, fatigue, vague physical symptoms. Respond to same therapies as young, no prescriptions. Disappear with age, they themselves don"t know symptoms, don"t feel sad instead feel tired. Don"t want people to think that they are crazy. Believe that all old people are depressed. Side consequence: suicide rate higher than any other age group. Men than women (huge gap 7-10 times more likely)
