The deinstitutionalization movement: marked by a larger number of mental hospital closing and shift to community- based residences instead, global movement, considered more human and cost effective. Kraepelin- developed the classification system (similar to the dsm: it classified groups of symptoms into separate mental disorders. Freud-first major steps toward understanding psychological disorders: psychoanalytic perspective. The individual receives relief from not going to a social event which reinforces their anxiety. The diathesis stress model: the idea that a diathesis (vulnerability/predisposition) can make a person more likely to experience a psychological disorder when the encounter a season of stress in life. Stressors are a trigger: risk factors- increase the likelihood of someone experiencing a negative outcome in life. There are social, individual and family risk factors: protective factors- decrease the likelihood of someone experiencing a negative outcome in life.
