Sociologically, a cult is a nrm (i. e. social movement based on religious beliefs) whose leader is alive. Has a bad connotation in media and public opinion because of some leaders such as: Vernon howell- aka david koresh (self-inflicted arson)- Many sects, denominations, and even world-wide religion start out as cults (nrm), sociologically speaking. Cults can become sects if a successor and the new leadership can pass along the. Sects can also happen when a group decides to break away from a larger group most important beliefs and practices to next generation of believers.
