Lecture 20: plants with only primary growth are known as herbaceous or grasses (they grow tall, branch, and do not produce wood). While plants that have both primary and secondary growth are known as woody (they grow tall, branch and produce wood). The bushes have a short woody stem that branches off close to the ground and generally do not exceed. While trees can reach higher heights: pheight is determined by the genotype and by the environment where the organism develops. That is, not all tree species are related to each other. 1 | p a g e: pconsider the following example. The fabaceae family is a monophyletic group , since all fabaceae share a common ancestor. For this reason, the guanacaste tree is more closely related to the bean both fabaceous plants than to the real guayac n (zygophyllaceae), despite the fact that the bean is an herb and the real guayac n is a tree.
