CS 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Hard Disk Drive, Readwrite, Ibm 305 Ramac
Document Summary
As we introduced earlier, the hard disk began its career in the 1950s, and has not stopped advancing until today (in fact, it is still advancing). Ibm has played a key role in this evolution from the very beginning. Indeed, the first hard disk was developed by ibm in 1956. It was called ramac (figure 1), and consisted internally of 50 disks of 24" each. However, the father of the modern hard disk was born in 1973, also from the hand of ibm. The beginnings: the ibm 305 ramac hard disk was 3340, and consisted of two 30. Mb modules, one fixed and the other removable. Establishing similes between some of its characteristics and those of a well-known rifle, it was baptized with the nickname "winchester". Although much more advanced, today"s hard drives are based entirely on the concepts introduced in that hard drive.
