PSY 433 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Erectile Dysfunction, Maprotiline, Priapism
Document Summary
To designate antidepressant drugs, the terms thymic analeptic or thimeric are also used: classification. Similar to antipsychotics, the classification of antidepressants is unsatisfactory. The most useful one is based on the mechanism of action of these drugs (only those available in the country are included). Non-specific inhibitors of amine reuptake (amitriptyline, chlorimipramine, trimipramine, maprotiline). The main indications for the use of antidepressants are: unipolar depression, depressive phase of bipolar disorder, panic disorder, phobic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia: mechanism of action. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors prolong the presence of neurotransmitters in the synaptic space by preventing enzymatic degradation. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors prevent this amine from being re-stored in synaptic vesicles. By acting selectively, they have a cleaner pharmacological action with the benefit of a favorable side effect profile. In contrast, other antidepressants interact with various amines in a non-specific way.
