While broca"s work focuses on the study of alterations in the area of production, neurologist henry: bastian (1837-1915) anticipates the famous wernicke and proposes alterations in the field of understanding. Bastian (1898, cited in benton, 2000) distinguishes between two forms ofacquired language alterations: aphasia and language amnesia, two entities with different symptoms and. 1 locations at the cerebral level (benton, 2000). Bastian"s proposals were highly criticizedeven though the usefulness of the two types of disorders he described was recognized based on his theoretical associatationist model: verbal deafness and verbal blindness (see manning, 1992). It was also the one who formulated a general theory of aphasia that proposed the relationship between each of the components of language and a given brain area. The proposed modewas able to predict the possible existence of certain tables that had not been noticed so far. The appearance of these paintings depended on the area where the injury was located.
