PSYCH 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: East Los Angeles College, Naturalistic Observation, Psych
Document Summary
Naturalistic observation: observation of behaviour of people (or animals) in their natural environment. Clinical observation: observation of behaviour of people undergoing treatment/ diagnosis. Refer to case studies: description of an individual"s behaviour during clinical treatment. Identify phenomenon and indicate something about its magnitude. Correlational studies: measurement of relationship between two or more variables of people (or animals) Descriptive statistic that describes the relationship between two variables. We cannot know the direction of cause and effect (which variable cause which) Experiments: observe how changes in the value of the independent variable effect the value of the dependent variable (confirm existence of cause-effect relations among variables) Hypothesis: a tentative statement about a cause and effect relation between two or more events: describes how the value of the dependent variable depends on the value of the independent variable. Theory: a set of statements designed to explain a set of phenomena: proposes relations among variables, makes new predictions, explains known facts.
