Significant shifts or disturbances in mood that affect normal perception, thought and behaviour. Causes: genetic, faulty cognition, brain biochemistry and sleep cycles. Major depression: severe feelings of sadness and hopelessness accompanied by changes in appetite, sleeping, sexual desire, desire to withdraw from others and change in activity level. 50-60% of people who have an episode will experience another. 90% with 2+ will experience many more over lifetime. Symptoms persist for at least two years and are less intense than that of a major depressive disorder. High risk of double depression episodes of major depression along with their dysthymia. Seasonal affective disorder (sad): depression during winter months or periods. Symptoms: sleep disturbances (sleep to much), craving of carbs, possible where daylight is limited (treated by exposure to light) weight gain. Periods of mania (excessive emotional arousal and wild, unrealistic activity) and depression. Bipolar i disorder: alternating maniac and major depressive. Symptoms of mania: strong feelings of elation, self-confidence, rapid speech, etc.
