Confirmation biases: tendency to interpret, seek and create information in ways that verify existing beliefs. Perseverance of beliefs: sticking to initial beliefs even after these beliefs have been discredited. Even in the face of contradictory information, people will still maintain their beliefs especially if the sought out supporting information. Confirmatory hypothesis testing: tendency to seek information that supports our existing views. Ask loading questions to force people to give answers that support our hypotheses. Does not occur when people are: not certain of their beliefs and concerns with accuracy. Self-fulfilling prophecy: the process by which perceiver"s expectations about a person eventually lead that person to behave in ways that confirm those expectations. Week 6: stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination group: two or more persons perceived as related because of: interactions with each other over time, membership in the same social category or common fate. Discrimination: negative behaviour directed against persons because of their membership in a particular group.
